3M 4104 Single-Coated Foam Tape comprises a 1.6 mm ± 0.2 mm open-cell polyurethane foam carrier coated on one side with an acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive. The product is supplied in slit rolls or log rolls from 6.35 mm to 1219 mm width, with a silicone-coated paper release liner. Carrier density is 320 kg/m³ ± 10% when measured by ASTM D3574-17 Test A. 180° peel adhesion to stainless steel after a 20-minute dwell is 23 N/100 mm per ASTM D3330/D3330M-04. Continuous service temperature range is −34 °C to 71 °C; intermittent exposure to 93 °C is limited to 24 h before adhesive softening risk increases. The open-cell structure provides compression recovery for low-force closure, but it is not a barrier for liquid water or pressurized air.
Closure force governs seal performance in enclosures where snap-fit latches exert less than 5 N per 100 mm perimeter. The 4104 carrier reaches 25% compression at approximately 34.5 kPa per ASTM D3574-17 Test C, but this value varies with foam density and cell size. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; users should request compression-deflection curves from the converter for the exact batch. Compression set after 22 h at 70 °C under 50% deflection is typically 10% to 15% per ASTM D3574-17 Test D, which makes the tape suitable for multiple compression cycles with less than 0.3 mm thickness loss. Compression force relaxation at 23 °C over 168 h remains below 15% for 25% compression. Compression-deflection testing is performed on an Instron 5966 universal testing machine with a 500 N load cell and a 152 mm-diameter compression platen at 12.7 mm/min, per ASTM D3574-17 Test C.
Usage in appliance gasketing and HVAC filter sealing requires evaluating dust-chamber performance under cyclic thermal loading from −20 °C to 50 °C. The foam carrier is not inherently flame-retardant; compliance with UL 94 V-0 is not claimed for the unmodified product. Where a burn requirement exists under IEC 60335-1:2020 household appliance safety, the assembly must be tested as a finished component because the adhesive and substrate affect flame propagation. The acrylic adhesive bonds to polycarbonate, ABS, and painted steel; however, adhesion to low-surface-energy polypropylene is below 10 N/100 mm after 72 h and requires corona or plasma treatment exceeding 42 dyn/cm.
On a rotary die-cutting line equipped with 254 mm-diameter magnetic cylinders and polyurethane anvils, kiss-cut depth is maintained at 0.05 mm to 0.10 mm into the liner to avoid liner fracture. Adhesive bleed at the cut edge is controlled by maintaining roll tension below 350 N/m and die blade temperature not exceeding 38 °C. The acrylic adhesive exhibits a shear storage modulus G′ of approximately 40 kPa at 1 Hz and 23 °C, decreasing to 8 kPa at 70 °C. This viscoelastic response controls edge flow during rotary die-cutting. If the cutting zone exceeds 38 °C, G′ falls below 10 kPa and adhesive strings form, causing liner contamination. Chilled anvils are therefore set to 15 °C to 20 °C and cutting speed is limited to 80 m/min on 254 mm-diameter magnetic cylinders, maintaining a process window of ± 5 °C.
Table 1 summarizes typical values measured on 1.6 mm-thick 4104 specimens conditioned at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity for 24 h. Values are not specifications but batch-averaged data from converting trials.
| Property | Method | Typical value | Unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carrier density | ASTM D3574-17 Test A | 320 ± 32 | kg/m³ |
| Overall thickness | ASTM D3652-16 | 1.6 ± 0.2 | mm |
| 180° peel adhesion to stainless steel | ASTM D3330/D3330M-04 | 23 | N/100 mm |
| Compression set | ASTM D3574-17 Test D | 10–15 | % |
| Liner release force | Modified ASTM D3330/D3330M-04 | 0.20–0.45 | N/10 mm |
Tensile strength of the foam carrier measured by ASTM D3574-17 Test E on die-cut dumbbells at 254 mm/min is 0.55 MPa ± 0.07 MPa, with elongation at break between 150% and 200%. Tear strength by ASTM D624-00 die C is 0.35 N/mm, which allows kiss-cut parts to be weeded without tearing. The acrylic adhesive exhibits 180° peel adhesion to high-density polyethylene of 2.5 N/100 mm, confirming that untreated polyolefins are not suitable substrates. Static shear at 23 °C with a 500 g load is greater than 10,000 min per ASTM D3654/D3654M-06.
On automated gasket placement cells, 4104 parts are frequently applied with vacuum end-effectors and 6-axis robots. Liner removal force must be controlled between 0.20 N/10 mm and 0.45 N/10 mm to prevent liner splitting on high-speed peel stations. Liner release is measured by a modified ASTM D3330/D3330M-04 procedure using a 180° peel configuration at 300 mm/min. Converted parts are delivered as kiss-cut rolls on a carrier liner with individual part spacing of 3 mm to 5 mm. Batch-to-batch variation in liner release force of ± 0.08 N/10 mm has been observed across different production lots; incoming inspection should include liner release on three positions across the web.
Closed-cell neoprene sponges with a water absorption of less than 1% by mass per ASTM D1056-14 remain necessary where the seal must prevent liquid ingress or maintain an IPX7 rating under IEC 60529:1989+A1:1999+A2:2013. The open-cell structure of 4104 absorbs water when immersed; therefore, the tape is not appropriate for continuous liquid contact. For dust sealing in IP5X enclosures, 4104 may be considered if the closure force is sufficient to maintain at least 25% compression. Published data for specific IP rating compliance with 4104 is limited; final enclosure testing per IEC 60529 is required. Silicone sponge remains preferable above 100 °C, where polyurethane oxidative degradation accelerates. Accelerated aging at 70 °C and 50% RH for 500 h shows tensile retention greater than 80% of unaged control; UV exposure per ASTM G154-16 for 200 h causes surface yellowing and embrittlement exceeding 30% loss in elongation. The product is not intended for direct outdoor use without a UV-blocking gasket cover or recessed channel.
Compared with double-coated foam tapes, 4104 bonds on only one face; the opposite face remains compressible but non-bonding. This permits a removable gasket configuration in which the foam is compressed against a mating surface without adhesive tack. Double-coated products may be specified where both surfaces must be fixed before assembly. Compared with unsupported acrylic transfer tapes, the foam carrier fills gaps from 0.8 mm to 1.6 mm and compensates for substrate non-planarity; transfer tapes fill gaps less than 0.25 mm. The acrylic adhesive on 4104 is not crosslinked to the same degree as high-temperature acrylic transfer tape adhesives; cohesive strength at 70 °C is lower, and sustained shear load should be kept below 300 Pa to avoid creep. RoHS compliance status should be confirmed by certificate of conformity against EU 2015/863 amending 2011/65/EU. REACH compliance for SVHCs above 0.1% w/w is not automatically certified for all formulations; request converter documentation for the specific lot.
Plasticized polyvinyl chloride and certain thermoplastic elastomers can extract monomer and cause adhesive softening or liner staining. Compatibility should be screened by 7-day contact aging at 60 °C per ASTM D471-16a for elastomeric substrates. Pre-drying of polyurethane foam is not required for typical indoor converting; however, at relative humidity above 60%, the open-cell carrier absorbs 2% to 4% moisture by mass and may increase liner curl and die-cutting variability. The acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive has a practical minimum application temperature of 10 °C; below this threshold, wet-out on stainless steel is incomplete and peel adhesion measured by ASTM D3330/D3330M-04 falls below 15 N/100 mm.
