3M™ Safety Stripe Tape 5702 is a general-purpose, printed poly(vinyl chloride) film tape coated with a rubber-resin pressure-sensitive adhesive. The roll construction is self-wound; no release liner is present. The visual marking consists of diagonal black stripes over a yellow vinyl background, with stripe repeat interval controlled during converting. The product is supplied in standard roll length of 32.9 m (36 yd) and in common widths from 25.4 mm (1 in) to 101.6 mm (4 in), depending on stock configuration in industrial supply channels.

Manufacturer technical data list a nominal total thickness of 0.14 mm (5.5 mil), tensile strength at break of 228 N/100 mm (13 lb/in), and elongation at break of 180%. Peel adhesion to stainless steel is reported under ASTM D3330 as 27 N/100 mm (25 oz/in). Thickness is measured according to ASTM D3652, and tensile strength and elongation are measured according to ASTM D3759. These values are typical, not lot-acceptance specifications; the manufacturer certificate of analysis should govern critical applications.

What Limits the Use of a 5.5 mil Plasticized Vinyl Tape in Cold-Start and High-Shear Floor Environments?

The pressure-sensitive adhesive is a rubber-resin system. For rubber-resin pressure-sensitive adhesives, application below 10°C (50°F) generally reduces wet-out because the adhesive storage modulus rises and conformability decreases. Published data for the 5702 adhesive under cold-start conditions is limited, but industrial practice is to keep substrate temperature at least 3°C above the dew point and to apply mechanical pressure with a hand roller or laminating tool. On concrete, laitance, curing compounds, and oil residues reduce initial peel force. Alkaline floor cleaners at pH 10-12 can leave hygroscopic salt residues after drying; these residues attract moisture and reduce adhesion after repeated washing.

High-shear traffic defines a boundary condition. The 0.14 mm vinyl backing is not reinforced and does not offer the abrasion resistance of mineral-coated floor marking products. Pallet-jack wheels, steel swarf, and embedded grit can cut or abrade the tape at the stripe interface. In distribution centers where pallet-jack traffic crosses the tape line at acute angles, edge lifting is the dominant observed failure mode; published data for this specific configuration is limited, but users should monitor the first 72 h after application for lifting at expansion joints, saw-cut control lines, and surface cracks.

Primary usage is visual demarcation. In assembly and warehouse operations, the tape is applied to mark pedestrian walkways, pallet staging zones, door swing areas, and boundaries around automated cells. 29 CFR 1910.144 establishes yellow as the standard safety color for caution and black as contrast. ANSI Z535.1 assigns Safety Yellow to caution. Use of this tape supports color convention, but it is not a guard, barrier, or substitute for machine guarding required by 29 CFR 1910.212.

For equipment edge marking, the tape is cut and wrapped over clean primed metal. On painted surfaces, adhesion is lower than on stainless steel; published data for painted substrate peel force is limited, so an adhesion trial is required. Solvent wiping with a mixture of isopropanol and water may remove dust but can soften some acrylic coatings. The tape is not designed for long-term outdoor exposure. UV radiation can embrittle the plasticized vinyl backing and fade the yellow pigment, but no published ASTM G154 accelerated weathering data for this product is available.

Because the backing is printed, the stripe pattern provides preconfigured hazard contrast without requiring separate black and yellow tapes. This distinguishes 5702 from solid-color vinyl tapes of the same general construction.

Adhesion to Stainless Steel, Dew Point Control, and Solvent Compatibility Limits

Peel adhesion is characterized on stainless steel under ASTM D3330. The reported value of 27 N/100 mm (25 oz/in) represents a clean, smooth, high-energy substrate. Concrete, masonry, and low-energy plastics such as polypropylene and polyethylene exhibit lower peel force. The adhesive is not formulated for untreated low-energy polymers; corona treatment or primer may be required, but published data for this specific configuration is limited. Users should not extrapolate the steel peel value to porous or low-energy surfaces.

Solvent exposure creates two distinct risks. First, ketone and chlorinated solvents can extract plasticizer from the poly(vinyl chloride) backing, increasing stiffness and reducing elongation. Second, methylene chloride and N-methylpyrrolidone can solvate the rubber-resin adhesive and cause delamination under load. Cleaning agents should be limited to short-wipe application with immediate evaporation. Prolonged immersion is not recommended. The tape should not be used where continuous hydrocarbon splash occurs, because the rubber-resin adhesive can lose tack and creep under sustained load.

Dew point control is critical during application in unheated loading docks. When substrate temperature is below 10°C, condensation can form at the adhesive-substrate interface and prevent wet-out. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, but a common field control is to apply only when the substrate temperature is at least 3°C above the measured dew point. On vertical equipment surfaces, edge creep can occur at elevated service temperatures; users should verify performance in the actual thermal environment before full installation.

When a Pressure-Sensitive Vinyl Roll Replaces Two-Part Urethane Coatings or Mineral-Coated Anti-Slip Tapes

When replacement of a floor coating is evaluated, the tape provides immediate visual boundaries without the pot-life constraints of two-part urethane systems. The absence of mixed resin means no viscosity rise after catalyzing and no solvent entrapment in pinholes. However, the tape has a nominal thickness of 0.14 mm (5.5 mil); it does not fill surface porosity or provide a wear layer. A separate comparative wear test should be used, such as ASTM D4060 or a representative traffic test. Published data for this specific configuration is limited.

Compared with anti-slip tapes, 5702 has no mineral particles and no published slip-resistance value under ASTM D2047. It should not be selected where coefficient of friction is a safety criterion. Compared with solid-color vinyl tapes, the printed diagonal pattern eliminates the need to align two tapes for hazard contrast, but the base polymer and adhesive system remain within the same general-purpose class. Compared with heavy-duty floor marking tapes using thicker backings or crosslinked adhesives, 5702 has lower profilometry mismatch tolerance on rough concrete; concrete surface profile can be assessed under ASTM D4417 and may indicate the need for a thicker tape or primer.

Application is roll-fed. The tape is pulled from the roll, aligned, and burnished with a hand roller or squeegee. For wide rolls, a dual-roller applicator with edge guides can be used to reduce skew and edge curl. Wet-out on textured concrete is improved by mechanical pressure, but published data for this specific configuration is limited. The tape should not be stretched during application; elongation at break is 180%, and excessive unwind tension can introduce residual stress that promotes edge lifting later.

Storage is in original cartons at controlled temperature. General pressure-sensitive tape storage guidance from manufacturers is 21°C (70°F) and 50% relative humidity, but the 3M technical data sheet for 5702 may not list a proprietary storage envelope. If no manufacturer shelf life is stated for a specific lot, use within 12 months of receipt is common industrial practice for rubber-resin vinyl tapes. Avoid direct sunlight and ozone sources, which accelerate plasticizer migration and embrittlement. Removal after long service may leave adhesive residue. Low-odor adhesive removers or dry ice blasting can be evaluated on a discrete test area, but published data for this specific configuration is limited.
