Dielectric Polymers NT-2802SW Functional Splice Tape is supplied as a 0.30 mm ± 0.03 mm calendered silicone elastomer film with one interleaved release ply. The product is formulated without an applied pressure-sensitive adhesive; bonding develops through chain interdiffusion between adjacent elastomer surfaces after controlled-tension wrapping. Manufacturer’s technical bulletin NT-2802SW-TDS-2024 lists elongation at break of 540% in the machine direction per ASTM D412-16, volume resistivity of 1.1 × 1014 Ω·cm per ASTM D257-14, and single-ply dielectric breakdown of 28.6 kV/mm per ASTM D149-20. The tape is available in 25 mm, 38 mm, and 51 mm widths at a 9.1 m roll length. Its functional designation distinguishes it from standard electrical tapes because the splice layer is intended to restore a dielectric envelope over a cable jacket disruption, not to serve as a primary insulation wrap.
Compared with ethylene-propylene rubber self-amalgamating tapes and butyl mastic splice tapes, NT-2802SW contains no peroxide-cured ethylidene norbornene backbone and no cold-flow mastic. The absence of a mastic layer removes the re-entry residue common to butyl-based splice overwraps and reduces void formation during thermal cycling. The silicone formulation is applied as a half-lapped overwrap over clean, dry silicone insulation, motor lead pigtail splices, and low-voltage bus bar transitions. The product is not intended for use as a primary insulation layer on unskinned copper conductors without an intermediate stress-control layer.

Self-fusion does not initiate at zero contact pressure. A minimum interfacial pressure of 0.15 MPa is required, achieved by applying the tape under 4.0–5.5 N line tension with 50–100% elongation. At ambient temperatures below 5 °C, the tape loses compliance and should be conditioned for 4 h at 18–25 °C before application. Above 60% relative humidity, condensation on freshly exposed silicone surfaces can suppress interdiffusion. Manufacturer’s installation bulletin 2802SW-IB-2023 specifies wiping the splice region with anhydrous isopropanol and low-lint wipes, followed by a 60 s flash-off period at 20 °C before wrapping.
Tension excursions above 6.0 N produce necking that reduces applied ply thickness to 0.22–0.24 mm and creates thin edges at overlap boundaries. Dielectric testing on a three-ply splice wrap applied at 6.5 N showed breakdown at 18.4 kV/mm at the overlap transition, compared with 26.1 kV/mm for a wrap applied at 4.5 N. Data from a servo-feedback tape wrapping head in a continuous wire harness cell indicated tension ripple of ±0.3 N at 120 rpm head speed. Sustained operation above 180 rpm generated frictional heating of tape guide rollers to 65 °C, which softened the release interlayer and caused transfer wrinkles at the wind-up stage.
For manual low-volume splice repair, hand tension is calibrated using a spring gauge to remain within 4.0–5.5 N. Operators are instructed to re-tension when elongation falls below 50% because fusion strength is orientation-dependent. A post-wrap consolidation step at 0.20 MPa and 80 °C for 45 s using a heated silicone pressure roller accelerates interdiffusion and reduces entrapped air pockets. Without this consolidation step, the initial overlap shear remains below 0.15 MPa for 6 h at 23 °C.
In splice re-entry operations, NT-2802SW can be cut longitudinally without tearing adjacent jacket material because the absence of adhesive bond prevents transfer to the underlying insulation. Published peel performance data for direct application to etched fluoropolymer insulation is limited; validation on a representative substrate per ASTM D1000-17 is required before production use.
NT-2802SW is formulated with a platinum-catalyzed addition-cure silicone elastomer system. Direct web contact with sulfur-vulcanized EPDM or neoprene cable jackets can induce cure inhibition at the interface above 90 °C, because residual amine antidegradants and zinc dialkyldithiocarbamates migrate into the silicone surface. In contrast, peroxide-cured EPDM and XLPE substrates show no inhibition after 168 h at 120 °C when screened in accordance with ISO 11346:2023. The product should not be used as a direct cover over unreacted amine-cured epoxy splice bodies because exothermic amine crosslinking at 80–100 °C generates surface roughness that prevents intimate tape contact.
Plasticizer migration from flexible PVC adjacent to the splice is a known boundary condition. When NT-2802SW was wrapped over a 70 Shore A PVC jacket containing 35 phr dioctyl phthalate, self-fusion overlap shear declined from 0.30 MPa to 0.19 MPa after 30 days at 60 °C. A barrier layer of glass-reinforced mica tape or a solvent-free silicone liner strip is required where PVC contact is unavoidable.

In automated splicing operations on multi-conductor cable assemblies, roll-fed NT-2802SW is slit to 19 mm width and applied by a mandrel-driven wrapping station with a closed-loop tension controller. The splice wrap is consolidated under a heated silicone pressure roller at 0.20 MPa and 80 °C for 45 s. High-potential acceptance testing per IEC 60060-1:2010 at 6.0 kV rms for 60 s is used on finished splices with 0.90 mm total wrap thickness. The product is then overwrapped with a flame-retardant polyester tape where mechanical abrasion resistance is required, without loss of the underlying dielectric envelope.
