Solvay Shrinktape III PVA tape is a polyvinyl alcohol-based heat-shrinkable film supplied in roll form for temporary consolidation of dry composite lay-ups and for water-removable mandrel structures. PVA in this designation refers to polyvinyl alcohol, not polyvinyl acetate; this distinction is material because polyvinyl alcohol films are water-soluble and humidity-sensitive, whereas polyvinyl acetate films are not readily heat-shrinkable and do not disperse in warm water. The designation III identifies a three-layer cast construction: two outer skins of low-plasticizer PVA provide surface hardness and reduced blocking during storage, while the core layer carries a higher plasticizer fraction to lower shrink-initiation temperature and improve conformation around small radii. Standard roll formats include widths of 25 mm, 50 mm, 100 mm, and 300 mm, with slit-edge tolerance of ±0.5 mm. Nominal thicknesses are 0.025 mm, 0.050 mm, and 0.100 mm. Roll lengths are 100 m and 250 m on 76 mm internal-diameter cores. The tape is not preslit below 25 mm on standard converting lines without a re-registration pass.

Storage and handling of the film influence later processing. At 22 °C and 45% RH, the tape can be held for 12 months in sealed polyethylene packaging without measurable shift in shrink onset. At 65% RH, PVA absorbs moisture and the roll face can swell by 0.3%; this produces edge-thickness variation that appears as web camber during slitting. Storage above 30 °C is not recommended because interlayer pressure above 0.1 MPa initiates blocking. Production-scale slitters running at 100 m/min generate sufficient heat to soften the core layer if tension exceeds 0.2 N/mm; the web should be driven from the unwind rather than pulled by the rewind nip.

What Limits Shrinkage Uniformity and Processing Window in Forced-Air Ovens?

Unrestrained linear shrinkage is measured under ASTM D2732-20 at 5 °C/min. Shrink onset for Shrinktape III is 65 °C to 75 °C, and practical consolidation proceeds from 90 °C to 125 °C. Above 140 °C the film loses tensile integrity and can deposit PVA residue on epoxy mould surfaces. The critical limitation in convection ovens is not setpoint but air velocity. Below 1.5 m/s, the surface temperature spread across a 300 mm web can exceed 8 °C, generating transverse shrink differentials that cause puckering and camber. Production ovens should maintain 2.0 m/s to 4.0 m/s with cross-flow and return-air baffles; edge-to-centre temperature difference should remain below 5 °C as verified with thermocouple arrays mounted on a dummy mandrel.

Shrink force for 0.050 mm film is low; constrained biaxial testing at 110 °C yields a machine-direction stress below 0.35 MPa. This low stress allows compression of polyurethane mandrels without crushing honeycomb or low-density syntactic foam. However, the same low force means the tape cannot compensate for bridging over large drop-offs; a supplementary vacuum bag or pressure intensifier may be required for concave tooling with radius below 10 mm.

Solvay Shrinktape III PVA Tape: Thickness, Tensile, and Dissolution Data

Representative values for 0.050 mm cast PVA shrink tape appear in Table 1. The data are derived from standard test methods and should be confirmed against the lot certificate because plasticizer content is adjusted to control shrink onset.

Table 1: Representative physical property data for Solvay Shrinktape III PVA tape
    Property Test method Representative value
    Nominal thickness ASTM D374-16 0.050 mm ± 5%
Tensile strength, machine direction ASTM D882-18 45 MPa
Tensile strength, transverse direction ASTM D882-18 38 MPa
    Elongation at break, MD/TD ASTM D882-18 180% / 150%
    Unrestrained linear shrinkage MD at 135 °C, 10 min ASTM D2732-20 18% to 22%
    Unrestrained linear shrinkage TD at 135 °C, 10 min ASTM D2732-20 8% to 12%
Water dissolution at 60 °C, still water Internal method 6 min for 0.050 mm sheet

Dissolution is thickness- and agitation-dependent. A 0.025 mm film disperses in approximately 3 min at 60 °C, whereas a 0.100 mm film may require 12 min. Mechanical agitation above 200 rpm reduces dissolution time by 40% to 50%. Cold-water immersion below 20 °C causes swelling but not complete dissolution within 30 min; wet films should be removed before they dry and bond to the laminate.

In filament winding of carbon-fibre tubular structures, Shrinktape III is applied as a 25 mm overwrap at 45° to the tube axis. Winding tension is held between 5 N and 15 N per 100 mm web width. Tension below 5 N produces bridging across ply drop-offs; tension above 15 N per 100 mm has caused necking and web breaks in 0.025 mm film on 600 mm multi-roll unwind stands. Overlap is set at 50% to produce stable radial compaction. The wound part is heated first at 95 °C for 15 min to initiate uniform shrinkage, then at 125 °C for 10 min to complete consolidation. After cure, mandrel removal is carried out in agitated water at 60 °C; no mechanical extraction force is needed. This is the primary functional difference from polyester and nylon shrink tapes, which require pull-out or remain on the outer surface.

Compatibility limits must be respected. The tape is not recommended for direct contact with water-based mandrel coatings that soften below 60 °C. Pre-drying at 40 °C for 4 h is required when relative humidity exceeds 60% just before winding. Methyl ethyl ketone and other ketone solvents swell PVA rapidly; wiping with MEK at 22 °C causes film tearing below 0.25 MPa tensile stress. If the overwrap is vacuum bagged, a perforated release film must separate the PVA tape from wet breather fabric to prevent blocked vent channels during cure.

When the Tape Is Compared with Polyester, PTFE, and Polyolefin Shrink Tapes

Table 2 summarises the comparative features based on published typical film data for 0.050 mm thickness. Polyester shrink tape generates higher shrink force and a higher continuous-use temperature, but it is insoluble and cannot be washed from enclosed mandrel geometries. PTFE tapes process to 260 °C but are higher in cost and cannot be removed by dissolution. Polyolefin shrink tapes are unstable above 100 °C in epoxy autoclave cures and may melt-bond to nylon bagging film.

    Shrink onset 65 °C–75 °C 85 °C–100 °C 250 °C+ 90 °C–120 °C
    Practical maximum continuous service 125 °C 150 °C 260 °C 100 °C

For a production winding line, the selection therefore hinges on whether water contact is permitted after cure. If the part has internal channels or closed ends, the water-soluble removal of Shrinktape III eliminates the need for a mechanical pull-out gripping feature. If the cure schedule exceeds 150 °C or the laminate cannot tolerate moisture, polyester or PTFE become the preferred shrink-tape classes despite their higher removal force and residue potential.

For a 1 m long, 75 mm diameter carbon-fibre/epoxy tube overwrapped with 0.050 mm Shrinktape III at 50% overlap, mandrel extraction by water dissolution requires a flow-through mandrel wash station rather than a still-water tank. Water temperature is held at 60 °C with recirculation at 20 L/min; extraction of the PVA overwrap from a 600 mm long bonded section was completed in 25 min to 35 min. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so initial production trials should monitor effluent turbidity and residual PVA by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. If the wash water is recirculated, a 25 µm bag filter is placed in the return line to prevent redeposition of PVA particles on the laminate surface.

Residual water-soluble PVA on the cured laminate can reduce subsequent coating adhesion. After dissolution, the surface must be rinsed with deionised water at 50 °C for 5 min and dried at 60 °C until the surface reaches 0.1% moisture by mass. If the part enters a paint line without rinsing, adhesion loss under ASTM D4541 pull-off testing may occur. This is a boundary condition that does not apply to polyester or PTFE shrink tapes, which leave no water-soluble residue but require peel forces that can damage thin-skinned laminates.

Quality control for incoming lots should include measurement of nominal thickness per ASTM D374-16, unrestrained shrinkage per ASTM D2732-20, and dissolution time in deionised water at 60 °C using a 500 mL stirred bath. A lot is placed on hold if shrink-onset temperature shifts by more than ±5 °C against the previous lot average or if roll-to-roll thickness range exceeds ±5%. On a twin-screw compounding line with 40:1 L/D barrel, plasticizer melt-feeding variations of 0.5 wt% have shifted shrink onset by 4 °C; therefore, the converting lot must be traceable to the extrusion batch. Compliance declarations per RoHS Recast 2011/65/EU Annex II require lead < 0.1 wt%, cadmium < 0.01 wt%, mercury < 0.1 wt%, and hexavalent chromium < 0.1 wt%. Polyvinyl alcohol film may be specified under FDA 21 CFR 177.1670 for incidental food contact, but dissolution above 60 °C prevents use as a food-contact barrier in hot aqueous service.
